Choosing supplements with clarity, not pressure
Practical questions for people living with MS and the families who research alongside them.
Four questions to ask about any supplement
Ours included. Good answers are a sign of a brand worth your time.
Does my neurologist know about this?
Bring a written list of every supplement, vitamin and medication you take. Supplements can interact with prescriptions, and your care team can only check what they know about.
Who made it, and why?
A name and a qualification behind a formula is a reasonable thing to ask for. Be wary of products that lead with slogans and say little about who stands behind them.
What exactly is in it?
Read the full ingredient list, including the "other ingredients" line where fillers often appear. If you cannot find it, ask the seller.
What is it claiming?
A supplement supports health. Any product that says it treats, cures or reverses MS is making a claim it cannot back.
If this is where you are
The first weeks after diagnosis
Gather your questions, write down what you take now, and ask your neurologist what to prioritize.
For family members researching
Look for physician-led sources, ask about ingredients, and share findings with the person living with MS before acting on them.
Reading a supplement label
Active ingredients, other ingredients, serving size and the FDA disclaimer each tell you something different.
More articles are on the blog.
Talk to your neurologist. Supplements are not a substitute for your MS care plan. Share the full list of what you take with your neurologist or pharmacist before you start something new.
